"E conchis omnia"
While Erasmus Darwin was not a traditional ecologist, he was certainly an early naturalist and the grandfather of Charles Darwin, the father of natural selection. Erasmus Darwin was a trained physician, poet, and philosopher who had a passion for the natural world, particularly plants and fossils. While Charles Darwin denied influence from Erasmus Darwin, particularly from Erasmus Darwin's Zoomania (1794), Erasmus seems to have had similar thoughts regarding how species may be connected. The quote "E conchis omnia" translates to "everything from shells" and was displayed in Erasmus Darwin's office.
